Read Dr. Joseph Maroon’s Published Article on Hyperbaric Oxygen

July 2022  Neurosurgeon, triathlete and wellness expert, Dr. Joseph Maroon’s article on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) was published this month in the popular scientific journal Frontiers in Neurology. The article is entitled, The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on cognition, performance, proteomics, and telomere length—The difference between zero and one: A case report.

In the article, Dr. Maroon reviews numerous potential neurologic applications for HBOT to aid a variety of medical and mental health conditions. In addition, he discusses his own 3-month treatment with HBOT and the various outcomes and outcome measures employed that demonstrated his own neurological and physical benefits when comparing pre-treatment to post-treatment results.  Specifically, he discusses results from neurocognition and cardiopulmonary function assessments.  These included, neuroimaging and HBOT’s effect on novel biomarkers such as telomere length and proteomics before and after 60 HBOT treatments.

In the article, Dr. Maroon discusses his surprising results, including, improvements in neurocognition, brain blood flow, exercise anaerobic endurance and strength, and reduction in inflammatory markers. (Below image is of a special type of MRI called, Dynamic Susceptibility Contrast-enhanced (DSC), that demonstrated improved brain blood flow following 3-months of HBOT).
