New Article by Dr. Joseph Maroon: Study on a Supplement to Increase Brain Antioxidant in Alzheimer’s disease

Aug 2026 Dr. Joseph Maroon, along with lead authors, Drs. Pravat K. Mandal and Oscar L. Lopez, and Drs. Patricia Corby, George Perry and and Riddhi Patira, have recently published the article entitled, Bypassing the bottleneck: Gamma-glutamylcysteine supplementation for brain glutathione enrichment in Alzheimer’s disease, in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major neurodegenerative disorder affecting more than 7 million Americans.  Glutathione (GSH) is considered the master antioxidant in the brain.  In Dr. Maroon’s et al article they suggest that GSH levels can be enriched through supplementation with γ-glutamylcysteine (GGC), the immediate precursor in the formation of GSH. In the article the researchers discuss  that GGC has an excellent safety record and bioavailability. And that GGC is a strong candidate to investigate for brain GSH enrichment and potentially improving cognitive enhancement for patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

There is a ongoing safety and tolerability of GGC supplementation on MCI patients at the University of Pittsburgh, lead by Dr. Mandal (Clinical trial ID: NCT07583251). There is an urgent need for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial for academic research to assess the efficacy of GGC supplements in MCI patients for brain GSH enrichment and subsequent enhancement of cognitive performance.
