Dr. Joseph Maroon Lectures at Largest Neurosurgeon Meeting in US

October 2024 Dr. Joseph C. Maroon, clinical professor and vice chairman of neurosurgery at UPMC was an invited lecturer to the Annual Meeting on September 30th for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the largest group of neurosurgeons in the United States with over 2,000 attendees.Dr. Maroon spoke at the symposium on The Neurosurgeon’s Role in Sports Medicine. The title of his talk was “Serendipity and Kaizen”. He outlined how the ImPACT neurocognitive test, which he co-developed, happened serendipitously by a challenge from Coach Chuck Noll for more objective data for return to play of an athlete after a concussion.

This challenge resulted in the ImPACT neurocognitive test which has now been given to 25 million athletes and others. Further, the Think First Foundation for the prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries was also a serendipitous creation when Dr. Maroon was President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Dr. Robert Ojemann from Harvard was President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. It is now a joint outreach program with over 100 chapters in the US and other countries. Both contributions exemplified the Japanese work ethic of Kaizen—seeking continual improvement and never being satisfied with the status quo.
