Happy Birthday Dr. Joe Maroon

May 26, 2025  This past Monday was the federal holiday for remembering those who served and gave their ultimate sacrifice for our country.   This year Memorial Day fell on another special day, the birthday of Dr. Joseph Maroon.  Dr. Maroon celebrated his four score and five Birthday in a way that defines his life, he went biking.  Dr. Maroon is also a veteran, having served in military intelligence, and he wore his Army biking shirt (see photo) to recognize and honor those who we remember.

Dr. Maroon’s commitment to heath and wellness, both personally and through his participation in numerous organizations, can be summed up in a simple phase that he uses often. “I hope to die young, as late as possible.”  This phrase reflects his lifetime commitment to daily exercise, consuming a healthy diet, reducing stress and maintaining family and social connections.

Dr Joseph Maroon’s book, Square One: A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life, is an autobiographical and self help book by world-class neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon. At the age of forty-one, a rapid series of losses and setbacks led him into a baffling new reality—and straight into the darkness of depression. Maroon’s unexpected savior was a slim, leather-bound book titled I Dare You, which taught him how to address four key areas vital to rebalancing his life: good health, a sense of spirituality, meaningful work, and strong relationships.

In Square One, Maroon combines deeply personal anecdotes with illuminating scientific explanations to help readers rebalance their priorities. With keen insights into what it takes to avoid emotional, spiritual, and physical burnout and to seek more joy and creativity in life, Maroon guides readers back to “square one” so they can lead more balanced lives and achieve success.
