Dr Maroon takes First Place in Ironman

Dr Maoon and Alp Aug 4 2019August 4, 2019  Dr Joseph Maroon has tackled the Hawaiian Ironman Championship 8 times. He has also completed numerous half triathlons and others over the years.  Earlier this month he took first place in his division at the 28th Annual FIT Family Series Triathlon, located at Alum Creek State Park, Delaware, Ohio.

This was an olympic distance triathlon:  1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 6.2 mile run. His time was an impressive 3:48.  This was the 28th Annual Fit Family series race with over 600 participants.

As the Wellness Advisor to UPMC Neurosurgery Department he has frequently discussed with the neurosurgical residents about the benefits of regular exercise.  This year, resident Alp Ozpinar, MD, participated with Dr Maroon and in his first ever race and took 8th place in the very competitive 30 t0 34 y/o division.

Congratulations to both Dr Maroon and Dr Ozpinar for being great examples of healthy living at any age.
