The use of Topical CBD in Former Athletes Shows Positive Pain Relief

April 2023  It has been over a decade since I first became interest in the pain and anxiety relief associated with using CBD capsules. I continue to recommend CBD, as both capsules and as a topical lotion for my patients, family and friends, and athletes for improving sleep quality, helping joint pain and a profound calming effect.  I have lectured frequently on the benefits of hemp-derived CBD for neurological issues, mental health and peripheral  pain and numbness of the arms and legs.

A recent research study in March 2023, scientists investigated topical CBD for benefiting pain in former elite athletes.    The article, entitled, Topical cannabidiol is well tolerated in individuals with a history of elite physical performance and chronic lower extremity pain provided former professional athletes in US/American football, track and field, or basketball, with  topical CBD (10 mg twice daily by controlled dispenser) for chronic pain resulting from acute lower extremity injuries (mostly knee pain). They assessed pain, pain-related disability, and activities of daily living changes over the 6-week study period.  The results were impressive. The difference in scores from beginning to end of study revealed that 100% of subjects reported improvement in disability related to pain related to family/home activities.  93% of subjects reported improvement in recreation, social activities, occupational activities, and life-support activities; and 86% reported improvement in self-care.

What is CBD (cannabidiol)?

Most of CBD in the US is from extracts that come from hemp. CBD does not elicit the same psychoactive effects as seen with THC (i.e., users of CBD do not feel euphoric). Both THC and CBD attach to specific receptors on nerve cells to result in various actions.  By volume the skin has the most CBD receptors in the body.  It is for this reason many feel that topical CBD can be so beneficial when placed over the area of pain.

I would strongly recommend you review my article, entitled, Review of the neurological benefits of phytocannabinoids, It was published in 2018. It is a great review of the various benefits of CBD that most people can understand.  In my practice I often recommend topical CBD ointments for back, neck and other joint pains with good results.
