The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen for PTSD

In July 2022, Dr. Joseph Maroon, wrote an article entitled, The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on cognition, performance, proteomics, and telomere length—The difference between zero and one: A case report.  In that article he discussed both his experiences with the use of HBOT, along with the expanding mental health applications for this unique treatment.

This past Sunday, CBS-Sunday Morning News Show aired their recent interview of the Aviv Hyperbaric co-founder Dr. Shai Efrati.  During the interview Dr. Efrati described his lifechanging treatment helping veterans and others recover from PTSD.  The interview highlighted the those suffering from PTSD, be it from war or traumatic stress. The CBS Sunday Morning shed light on the HBOT treatment. Dr. Maroon has participated with AVIV Hyperbaric for numerous presentations and is a personal friend of Dr. Efrati. Below is a quote from Dr. Maroon on its potential benefits for post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and post-concussion syndrome.

Prior Quote from Dr. Maroon “Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy….  also has been used off label for closed head injuries, post-stroke, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and post-concussion syndrome (PCS) (3–7). Numerous HBO2 therapy mechanisms have been shown in both preclinical and clinical models including anti-inflammatory effects, stem cells recruitment, angiogenesis, neurogenesis, increased cerebral blood flow, mitochondrial function restoration, and cellular metabolism. By supplying repeated hyperoxic exposures, the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox is utilized, increasing HIF-1a levels along with tissues hyperoxygenation (8–10). Recently, HBO2 therapy was shown to induce both cognitive and physical performance enhancements in healthy aging adults (11, 12). For 8 years, I have used HBO2 therapy to treat patients with PCS when all other treatment modalities had failed.”
