Prevention Magazine in their July 22, 2019 article on, What is CBD?, they interviewed many experts including Dr Joseph Maroon. In the article they cite many of the findings reported in his 2018 article in Surgical Neurology, entitled, Review of the neurological benefits of phytocannabinoids. Here are some of the quotes from the magazine.
“Our bodies are thought to produce endocannabinoids by the billions every day. “We always thought the ‘runner’s high’ was due to the release of dopamine and endorphins. But now we know the euphoria is also from an endocannabinoid called anandamide,” its name derived from the Sanskrit word for bliss.
As Dr Maroon writes in his article the benefits of CBD are due to CBD’s ability to increase anandamide. CBD has a wide variety of benefits becauses it functions through so many mechanisms. In this table (left) from his article, CBD works through a variety of different cell types within our nervous system that can calm abnormal impulses, like associated with pain and seizures, modulate inflammation and aid in cellular repair.
