One of the most important things people learn early on in life is Nothing is Free! Everything we do, become or want has a cost. In my latest book, Square One: A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life, I reveal the terrible cost I paid trying to have it all and the methods I discovered to rebalance my life and start living again as a whole person.
I suffered from an extreme case of “burnout” –physical and emotional exhaustion, depression, intolerance with myself and co-workers and cynicism regarding life in general. I subsequently learned 83 % of workers report marked stress with their jobs , 50 percent experience sleep interference due to work-related stress and close to 30 percent of all workers experience burnout at some point in their careers. This approximates 50 percent in physicians and some health care workers.
Using my own life changing events, and those of thoses, I provide numerous insights and proven tools that can help prevent burnout and stress. I discuss four critical elements to balanced living: attention to diet and exercise, meaningful work, maintaining relationships and spirituality. Ideally, each should be equal in importance for a balanced life, similar to four sides to a square.
