What is a Successful Outcome Following Surgery

As healthcare in American continues to evolve it is clear that both cost and quality are equally important to our patients.  Federal healthcare insurances like Medicare and Medicaid are stressing the importance of four major areas in healthcare delivery as ways to determine quality of service: Hospital readmission rate, hospital acquired infections, length of hospital stay and hospitalization complication rate.

In addition to these measures I believe the best measure is how a patient feels and functions after a hospitalization or surgery and how they are able to resume the things they want to do.  Over the next 5 years these criteria, which are more subjective, will also be tracked and become very important as to what types of treatments insurances pay for.

At Tri-State Neurosurgical Associates – UPMC, we are actively looking to the future to build this information to help you make important decisions about your health.  Below is a list of results from 2012 comparing our hospitalization, surgery and patient data to those of other surgeons in the community. (Note: Surgical duration can vary based on types of surgery done which are not the same in this comparison)

If you have any addition questions with regards to these comparisons please contact our office.
