Tribe Coverage of Dr. Maroon’s Ellis Island Award

On May 10, 2025 Dr. Joseph Maroon, along with 80 outstanding award winners, received the 2025 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award for his contribution to sports medicine, neurosurgery and advancing research in the fields of cancer and degenerative traumatic injuries to the brain.  Dr. Maroon is a pioneering neurosurgeon, educator, and advocate whose career has left an indelible mark on medicine, sports safety, and holistic wellness.

In the Tribe LIVE article, reporter JoAnne Klimovich Harrop, discusses the many twists and turns as to how the Award came about and reviews many of Dr. Maroon’s accomplishments over his long career as a neurosurgeon. The article also provides numerous quotes from Dr. Maroon about his experience receiving the Award.

“This was the highest honor and recognition ever for me, especially given the fact that my grandparents came to this country and were given citizenship 125 years ago in the same Great Hall where this ceremony was held,” Maroon said. “The ‘circle’ was completed.”
