Dr. Joseph Maroon Visiting Professor at Tufts University Department of Neurosurgery

May 15, 2025– Dr. Joseph Maroon, Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery at UPMC was the guest lecturer and visiting professor at Tufts University in Boston.  It was a very pleasant reunion with Dr. Carl Heilman, professor of neurosurgery at Tufts, who trained with Dr. Maroon at Allegheny General Hospital several decades ago.

Dr. Maroon met with the faculty and residents.  His presentation was on Reflections in Sports Medicine over 50 Years.  He recounted his experience with athletes at all levels and also the development of the ImPACT neurocognitive test that has now been utilized 25 million times over the last 25 years by athletes in contact sports. He also shared his recent work and publications on hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the immunotherapy of cancer and the use  of MR spectroscopy to evaluate patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and Navy SEALs with repetitive head injuries

In April, another friend and former neurosurgical fellow who trained with Dr. Maroon, Dr. Roger Härtl, was honored with MOI Humanitarian Award for Advancing Neurosurgical Care in Tanzania.  Weill Cornell Medicine’s Department of Neurological Surgery  announced on April 2, 2025, that Dr. Roger Härtl, the Hansen-MacDonald Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Neurosurgery Spine, has been awarded the prestigious MOI Humanitarian Award. The honor was presented at the 11th Global Neurosurgery Course in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, in recognition of Dr. Härtl’s outstanding mentorship, enduring support, and dedication to advancing neurosurgery at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI).
