April 2023 In a recent Podcast with WELL+GOOD, Dr. Joseph Maroon  discussed his Top Tip for Staying Mentally and Physically Sharp. At 82, Dr. Maroon continues to focus on his physical, cognitive, spiritual and emotion health.  According to the CDC, the prevalence of dementia is approximately 6% to 10% of individuals aged 65 years or older; this percent increases with age.  Rising gradually for those who age from 65 to 74 yrs old to over 30% of those aged 85 or older.   In the podcast Dr. Maroon emphasizes the importance of Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is defined as – a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. In the interview Dr. Maroon states:

“Have mindfulness and awareness,” Dr. Maroon says. “Most people, like I did myself, are automatons. I functioned, I went through the day, I did everything reacting to all of the sensory input from other people and other circumstances without really being aware of where my life was going or what I was doing. Bring awareness and mindfulness on a daily basis to one’s square.”
