April 24, 2025 Dr. Joseph Maroon, professor of neurosurgery, Heindl Scholar in neuroscience and consultant to the Pittsburgh Steelers was the keynote speaker at the recent Focus Forward Long Live West Virginia conference held in Morgantown on April 22, 2025. This was the seventh year for Focus Forward, which explored how longevity and the use of technology factors into health and wellness. Other speakers included Albert Wright, President and CEO, WVU Health System; Scott Raines, President and CEO, Marshall Health Network; David Ramsey, President and CEO, Vandalia Health Network; David Gozal, Dean, Marshall University; E. Gordan Gee, President, WVU and others.

Speakers discussed how West Virginia can serve as both a patient and a living laboratory in global longevity lessons. Discussed was the intersection of health, wellness and economic mobility and how this complex relationship impacts businesses, workforce development, policy and education in West Virginia and around the world. Dr. Maroon’s presentation was entitled, “How to Die Young… as Late as Possible”. He shared his personal journey, life experience and innovative medical approaches to healthy aging and “compressing morbidity into the shortest possible time”.
