Dr. Joseph Maroon Places First in Florida Triathlon

Dr. Joseph Maroon, Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at UPMC, recently participated in the International Olympic Distance Triathlon in Clermont, Florida. Over 550 participants were registered. Dr. Maroon finished first in his age group with a time of just over 3 hours. Because most triathlons were cancelled this past year due to the pandemic, this was his first in person race in over a year and a half. The temperature was 92 degrees for the swim/bike/run event.

This was the 36th Annual Cool Sommer Mornings Triathlon & 5K Series at the World Triathlon Destination, Clermont, FL.  Dr. Maroon continued to train during the pandemic and had participated in a virtual race last summer. “I’m happy to have completed the race and done well“, said Dr. Maroon. “The heat was a problem but I had been training in similar conditions“. Dr. Maroon has participated in numerous marathons and triathlons including 8 Ironman Triathlon Championships in Kona HI.
