Dr. Joseph Maroon Interviewed about the Important Work of the Chuck Noll Foundation

August 2024 Comcast Newsmakers host, Sheila Hyland, recently interviewed neurosurgeon and concussion expert, Dr. Joseph Maroon, about the important work being been by the Chuck Noll Foundation located in Pittsburgh.  In the video interview, Dr. Maroon explains the founding and fund raising that is being being done by the Foundation to provide grants to researchers on the topic of concussion prevention.

History of the Foundation

The Chuck Noll is certainly well known as the Hall of Fame coach of the Steelers who played a critical role to dramatically increase the understanding of concussions, and pioneered important changes to testing concussions in athletes. His inquisitive mind ultimately led to substantial safety changes across many different sports and levels of competition.

In the 1990’s, Noll asked team neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon, to look into head injuries and their effects. Dr. Maroon ultimately teamed up with Mark Lovell, PhD, and Micky Collins, PhD to create a baseline test for determining the cognitive effects of concussions, the forerunner of what would become the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (IMPACT). The Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research was and is part of Coach Noll’s legacy and provides awards grants to advance research related to the diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the brain occurring primarily from sports activities.
