Recent Grants
NFL GRANT FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE DETECTION AND PREVENTION
Dr. Maroon, along with Head Team Physician of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dr. Anthony Yates, have received a grant from NFL Charities, the community service division of the National Football League NFL for $68,000 to evaluate cardiovascular risk factors, as found in specialized blood test, to determine whether omega-3 EFAs, found in fish oil can reduce these factors. Additional researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including Dr. Wecht will be lead by Dr. Yates, who is an internal medicine specialist at the University and a member of the NFL Cardiovascular Risk Subcommittee that evaluates player health risk factor intervention and prevention, plan to start the study in the 2005-2006 season. John Norwig, head athletic trainer for the Steelers and the other Steelers training staff will also participate. Additionally, the research is intended to evaluate whether omega-3 EFAs might reduce joint pain
