Dr. Maroon is Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His research into brain tumors and diseases of the spine has led to many innovative techniques for diagnosing and treating disorders of the spine and discs, tumors of the pituitary gland and orbits, and acoustic tumors. Dr. Maroon has been the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers since 1977 and has done extensive research and teaching in the area of concussions and other head injuries in athletes and neuropsychological testing of professional athletes. A board-certified neurosurgeon with nearly 30 years’ clinical experience, Dr. Maroon received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. He completed his surgical and neurosurgical training at Georgetown University, Washington; Indiana University; Oxford University, England; and the University of Vermont, Burlington. A member of many local, state, national, and international professional organizations, Dr. Maroon is licensed to practice in five states, including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. He is on the medical staffs of many tri-state area hospitals, including UPMC Passavant and UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Beaver Valley and UPMC St. Margaret. Dr. El-Kadi is a clinical professor, Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. El-Kadi specializes in spine and disc disorders and has also conducted extensive research into treatment of chronic subdural hematoma. He earned his medical degree at the Pirogov Medical Institute, Moscow, and his doctorate at the Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute, Moscow. Following his neurosurgical residency at the Burdenko Institute, Dr. El-Kadi completed additional residency and fellowship training at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; University of Connecticut, Hartford; Allegheny General Hospital; and West Virginia University, Morgantown. A member of the American Medical Association and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, he is on staff at UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Passavant, UPMC St. Margaret and UPMC Shadyside.
