February 8, 2012 – Dr. Maroon discusses recent animal and human studies that evaluate the metabolic phenomena that occurs in tumor cells. Specifically how tumors, especially brain tumors, thrive on glucose but can’t use another energy source called ketones. Ketones come from the stored energy found in fat. New investigations are examining the used of dietary and pharmacological treatments to reduce circulating levels of glucose and glutamine, another food source for brain tumors, in an attempt to starve these aggressive brain tumors.

Recent successes found in case reports on humans have shown the benefits of a restrictive ketogenic diet (RKD) to help reduce brain tumor growth by reducing glucose levels and increasing ketones.

Dr Maroon and co-author Russell Blaylock MD summarize much of their landmark article on their proposed cause of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, better known as CTE. First identified in professional football players the cause of CTE has lacked a clear explanation. In the original article published in Surgical Neurology International in the summer of 2011, the authors link CTE to an inflammatory response of the brain due to traumatic injury as one possible mechanism.
