Dr. Joseph Maroon, professor and vice chairman of the department of neurological surgery was recently the guest of honor of the neurology and neurosurgical societies of the Dominican Republic. Held in Santo Domingo, over 500 participants from many countries in South America presented clinical and research papers on innovative approaches to diseases of the brain and spine.

Dr. Maroon gave two presentations. He presented data on the management of cerebral concussion and specifically discussed the 1.75 million athletes now screened with the ImPACT testing system. This program was jointly developed by Dr. Maroon and Dr. Mark Lovell, a neuropsychologist also at the University of Pittsburgh.

His second talk was on epigenetics and longevity—how to live a longer and healthier life. Dr. Maroon presented information from his book, The Longevity Factor. He spoke on how nutritional factors, exercise, the avoidance of environmental toxins and stress impact our genes and directly our health and longevity.

The conference was dedicated to Dr. Jose Joaquin Puello, a fellow trainee of Dr. Maroon’s at Oxford University in England and the second neurosurgeon for the entire island that includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Maroon book, The Longevity Factor, is quoted regarding the benefits of resveratrol to protect cells from radiation’s toxin effects.

In his book, “The Longevity Factor,” Joseph C. Maroon, M.D., renowned neurosurgeon and anti-aging specialist with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, notes studies showing Resveratrol’s effectiveness in radiation therapy. “Results were positive in two ways,” he writes. “First, Resveratrol appeared to act as a tumor sensitizer, making malignant cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Resveratrol made normal tissue less sensitive to radiation, and this lower sensitivity would help minimize adverse side effects of radiation.”

Twenty healthy volunteers took a 40-milligram (mg) resveratrol extract or a placebo for six weeks, and subsequent blood tests revealed lower levels of inflammatory cytokines in the resveratrol group. Inflammation lies at the root of devastating age-related illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and Alzheimer’s, Dr. Maroon notes.

Resveratrol appears to be the strongest natural longevity gene-activating substance tested to date.

Read Dr. Maroon’s article on longevity and resveratrol. Much of this information can be found in his book The Longevity Factor. Read Article Here

Resveratrol appears to be the strongest natural longevity gene-activating substance tested to date. Other polyphenols, such as quercetin (found in grapes, apples and onions), along with other fruit and vegetable polyphenols also have various degrees of health benefits. This is why a glass or two of red wine per day, which only contains an average of 1 to 3 mg of resveratrol per bottle but is combined with over 500 other polyphenols, has been shown to also provide health benefits. Many scientists, including myself, believe it may be a natural mixture of plant polyphenols, along with a concentrated dietary supplement with resveratrol, that provides the most stable source of healthy gene-activating molecules.
